What is Modern Macramé?
Macramé is making a comeback. No longer maligned as the fad of the 70’s it’s getting a solid foothold in boho décor and is gaining popularity as a DIY craft.
What is macramé? It’s a form of textile art that’s produced by creating knots. You can create all sorts of home decor items, from wall hangings to plant holders, handbags and even spectacle pouches, there is almost no limit depending on your imagination.
Where did Macramé come from?
The origin of macramé dates back as early as the 3rd Century in China when made for ceremonial textiles as well as wall hangings. It is also said to have been discovered by European Sailors in 13th Century Arabic countries crafted by their Artisans. European sailors played a large role in promoting Macramé by sharing this art with new lands and bringing it back to Europe. It was used to deal with boredom on long voyages and would sell their crafted items when they landed in port.
In the mid to late 1800’s Macramé became a very popular hobby and a way to adorn a range of clothing and textiles until it fell out of favour but making a huge revival in the 1970’s.
